Thomas Jefferson wrote, βThe most sacred of the duties of government [is] to do equal and impartial justice to all its citizens.β The Department of Justice is committed to upholding the individual rights and the system of laws that make the United States the longest-running democracy in the world through fair and equal implementation of civil and criminal laws.
Eliminate Racial Bias in Law Enforcement and the Federal Justice System
Black lives matter. President McCarthy will direct the Justice Department to investigate racial bias in policing, courts, jails, and prisons across the nation with a focus on eliminating state-sponsored violence against people of color. Law enforcement must offer equal protection to all, no matter what their race, nation of origin, primary language, gender identity, mental health status, or abilities.
Reform the Criminal Justice System to Protect All People
The United States locks up more people than any other country in the world, with little to no public safety benefit. President McCarthy will pursue federal sentencing and corrections reform to focus law enforcement, prison, and community supervision resources on individuals who pose a serious and immediate threat to other people, not those who serve as a nuisance, suffer from substance abuse and mental health disorders, or have aged out of criminal behavior. President McCarthy will further encourage state and local efforts for reform with the same goals.
Protect Civil Rights
The Department of Justice is committed to defending the civil liberties granted to each individual by the Constitution of the United States, including the right to vote, the right to due process of law, and the right to privacy.
